Dedicated Freight Corridor and Railway Modernization

The ambitious Rs 81,459 cr worth 'Dedicated Freight Corridor' (DFC) project, meant for faster goods movement, will be completed by 2019.

The corridors would be utilizing the latest technology in rail transportation enabling average speed of freight trains to be raised from 25 kmph to 80 kmph and then 100 kmph. The corridors would use high horse power engines for haulage and specially designed wagons

The Railway Research and Development Organisation (RRDO) had developed capacity to design and make in the country itself with the specialized high capacity and high speed wagons for use on these corridors

Building Locomotives for Railway Modernization

US major General Electric and French giant Alstom have bagged $5.6 billion ( Rs 37,000 crore) worth of contract from the Indian Railways to build locomotives in Bihar. The projects, closely monitored by the PMO, involve manufacturing of 1000 diesel locomotives and 800 electric locomotives over next 11 years and is worth about Rs.40,000 crore.

A joint venture company between Ministry of Railways and GE Global Sourcing India Pvt. Ltd will now be incorporated, which shall construct and run the diesel locomotive factory (DLF), Marhowra. Ministry of Railways will hold 26% equity in the JV company.

France's Alstom has been picked to supply 800 electric locomotives and will also build an electric locomotive factory in Madhepura, Bihar for $3 billion.

GE will also work on an assured off-take model of 100 locomotives per annum for 10 years and the basic cost of 1000 freight locomotives will be about Rs 14,656 crore.

The government plans to invest $137 billion to modernize the railways by 2020.

Bangalore Metro

Namma Metro (literally "Our Metro"), also known as Bangalore Metro (Kannada: ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಮೆಟ್ರೋ), is a metro system for the city of Bangalore, Karnataka, India. The agency responsible for its implementation is the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL), a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Karnataka.

Namma Metro, conceived as a transportation solution for a city of 8.5 million where traffic gridlocks are common, has become notorious for delays and is often compared unfavourably with Delhi Metro, where the first two phases were completed ahead of schedule. When the-then prime minister Manmohan Singh laid the foundation stone for the 33-km Bengaluru project in June 2006, it was supposed to be completed by September 2011 at a cost of Rs 4,000 crore. Since then, an extension was approved, taking the length of the network to 42 km at an additional cost of nearly Rs 1,600 crore. However, so far, only 16.7 km of the network is functional, the cost has risen to Rs 14,000 crore and there is no sign that the first phase will be ready this year. A second phase totalling 115 km is also in the works, but construction has not started yet.

The progress of Namma Metro was reviewed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi through a video conference with Chief Secretary Kaushik Mukherjee and Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. Managing Director P.K. Kharola. Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has reiterated that they will finish the ongoing Phase I of Namma Metro project by December 31, 2015. The PM reportedly told officials to speed up the project and not to do delay it any further. The BMRCL has taken eight years to build the 43-kilometre metro stretch.

Two major financial institutions including German Development Bank have come forward to fund the next phase. BMRCL is also collecting fund from various other sources like builders by relaxing Floor Area Ratio regulations. There is an estimation to collect Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 crore. There is a requirement of Rs 26,000 crore to execute second phase project.
Prime Ministers interest in this major infrastructure project in India, may help speed up the work. Phase 2 could have started much earlier in parallel to Phase 1 as there was lesser need for underground lines and land take over.

Diamond Quadrilateral Bullet Train Project

The Diamond Quadrilateral is a project of the Indian railways to establish high speed rail network in India. This quadrilateral will connect the four metro cities in India, i.e. Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata.

The Rail Budget presented by Railway Minister to increase the speed of trains in select sectors to 160-200 km/h and also identified 12 sectors for high speed bullet train projects across the country. Higher speed for existing super fast trains can be achieved by upgrading the present rail network but bullet trains will require completely new infrastructure

High-speed train on Mumbai-Ahmedabad section will be the first bullet train corridor to be implemented in the country. The Mumbai–Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor is an approved high-speed railcorridor in India connecting the cities of Mumbai and Ahmedabad. If built, it will be India's first high speed rail line.

Construction of one kilometer of high speed railway track will cost Rs 100-140 crore and the country will need a total of Rs 90,000 crore to lay the entire high speed train corridor.

Proposed High-Speed Bullet Train Corridors in India ( 320 km / hour )

  • Mumbai-Ahmedabad
    • Mumbai–Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor is the first proposed high-speed rail corridor in India, connecting the two cities of Mumbai and Ahmedabad. The 650 km long high speed rail corridor will be India’s first high speed rail line.
    • The fare of the bullet train between Mumbai and Ahmedabad may be somewhere around one and half times more than the fare of the first AC of Rajdhani Express and it would be around ₹2800.
