Namma Metro (literally "Our Metro"), also known as Bangalore Metro (Kannada: ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಮೆಟ್ರೋ), is a metro system for the city of Bangalore, Karnataka, India. The agency responsible for its implementation is the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL), a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Karnataka.

Namma Metro, conceived as a transportation solution for a city of 8.5 million where traffic gridlocks are common, has become notorious for delays and is often compared unfavourably with Delhi Metro, where the first two phases were completed ahead of schedule. When the-then prime minister Manmohan Singh laid the foundation stone for the 33-km Bengaluru project in June 2006, it was supposed to be completed by September 2011 at a cost of Rs 4,000 crore. Since then, an extension was approved, taking the length of the network to 42 km at an additional cost of nearly Rs 1,600 crore. However, so far, only 16.7 km of the network is functional, the cost has risen to Rs 14,000 crore and there is no sign that the first phase will be ready this year. A second phase totalling 115 km is also in the works, but construction has not started yet.

The progress of Namma Metro was reviewed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi through a video conference with Chief Secretary Kaushik Mukherjee and Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. Managing Director P.K. Kharola. Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has reiterated that they will finish the ongoing Phase I of Namma Metro project by December 31, 2015. The PM reportedly told officials to speed up the project and not to do delay it any further. The BMRCL has taken eight years to build the 43-kilometre metro stretch.

Two major financial institutions including German Development Bank have come forward to fund the next phase. BMRCL is also collecting fund from various other sources like builders by relaxing Floor Area Ratio regulations. There is an estimation to collect Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 crore. There is a requirement of Rs 26,000 crore to execute second phase project.
Prime Ministers interest in this major infrastructure project in India, may help speed up the work. Phase 2 could have started much earlier in parallel to Phase 1 as there was lesser need for underground lines and land take over.
