Vizhinjam Major Deep Sea Port

cost_₹ 7525 Cr (Pvt) Port Sea Shipping

Vizhinjam International Seaport is a proposed port by the Arabian Sea atThiruvananthapuram in India. The total project expenditure is pegged at  6595 crores over three phases and is proposed to follow the landlord port model with a view to catering to passenger, container and other clean cargo.

Vizhinjam Port is one of the largest infrastructure projects being developed in the state of Kerala with an investment of over Rs 7,500 crore. It can handle ships of 18,000 TEU (each TEU refers to twenty foot equivalent units or the size of a normal cargo container). Built under the PPP model, the operator has to develop the container yard and the terminal buildings, and operate it for a 40 year period. Central government is keen to develop the strategic port as quickly as possible and gave all clearances on urgent basis. Central government also started developing the National Highway extensions to connect the port with NH7 / NH47.

  • Vizhinjam will be an all-weather port located on Southern tip of Indian Peninsula, just 10 nautical miles from the International Shipping Lane, making it capable of tapping the lion’s share of Indian transshipment cargo, now being largely handled by Colombo.
  • The key Suez-Malacca shipping lane runs very close to Vizhinjam, some ten nautical miles away, much closer than to any other Indian port. With changing technology, bigger vessels -- such as the 19,224 TEU MSC Oscar, the 19,100 TEU CSCL Globe or the 18,000 TEU Maersk Triple-E class -- are becoming popular because of their economies of scale and the consequent reduction in shipping costs.
  • Vizhinjam port is endowed with a natural seawater depth of up to 24 m as close as one nautical mile from the seacoast.  Due to this natural depth, Vizhinjam can attract the largest container vessels currently in operation and also the future mega container carriers.

  • It has a draft of 18 m, just 1 kilometer from the shore and which can be increased up to 25 m with minimal dredging. The project cost and maintenance cost will be minimum as the site needs minimal capital dredging. Availability of 20m contour within one nautical mile from the coast would facilitate flexibility of shipping operations.
  • No acquisition of land is needed for the port as it will come up in the land reclaimed from sea. Hence, there is very minimal rehabilitation and resettlement issues.
  • Close proximity to International Airport ,situated just 10 kms on the seashore itself.
  • Close proximity to NH7 , lifeline of India. NH-47 passes just 2 Kms away from the site and the main rail line only 8 Kms away.
  • Close to major tourist destinations in Kerala. Ability to welcome huge cruise ships which are currently not touching any ports in India. There are plans to add a cruise terminal in the port, exclusively to cater to tourism segment.
  • Currently motherships cannot call on Indian ports. All Indian cargo is being transshipped through Colombo, Dubai, Singapore ports. At present, about 1 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of Indian cargo get transshipped annually through foreign ports. Vizhinjam is strategically positioned to capture the huge market as it gives India the ability to ship its products directly at a cheaper cost and much faster rate, avoiding the need to depend on other countries.
  • India suffers from high logistics costs because of the lack of direct calls by main shipping lines.
  • Strategic location near the tip of India, makes it equally accessible to cities in east and west coasts of India.
Gautam Adani owned Adani Ports is all set to build the International Seaport at Vizhinjam, located 16 km from Thiruvananthapuram, the state capital. Adani Ports is India's leading private sector port developer and operator, and operates India's most sophisticated and fastest growing container port. Adani Ports owns and operates seven ports and terminals – Mundra, Dahej, Hazira and Tuna Tekra, Kandla in Gujarat, Dhamra in Orissa, Mormugao in Goa and Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, India. Vizhinjam port is expected to be operational in a record time of less than 1000 days.
