Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched his ambitious “Make in India” program on 25 September, 2014, pledging to lower barriers to doing business and promote foreign investment. He is hoping to transform Asia’s third-largest economy into a manufacturing powerhouse like China.

‘Make in India’ recognizes ‘ease of doing business’ as the single most important factor to promote entrepreneurship. A number of initiatives have already been undertaken to ease business environment. The aim is to de-license and de-regulate the industry during the entire life cycle of a business.
With the easing of investment caps and controls, India’s high-value industrial sectors – defence, construction and railways – are now open to global participation.Policy in Defence sector liberalised and FDI cap raised from 26% to 49%.Portfolio investment in Defence sector permitted upto 24% under the automatic route.100% FDI allowed in Defence sector for modern and state- of- the- art technology on case to case labels.100% FDI under automatic route permitted in construction, operation and maintenance in specified Rail Infrastructure projects.

US-based GE got the contract for the Rs 14,656 crore diesel locomotive factory at Marhowra, 81 km north of state capital Patna. French transport giant Alstom got the electric locomotive project, worth Rs 20,000 crore in Madhepura, about 280 km northeast of Patna.
Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) of South Korea will work with Hindustan Shipyard Limited, Vizag to build warships in India. Another South Korean major, Samsung, has also agreed to build LNG tankers with Kochi Shipyard. Another decision made recently was that Goa shipyard will construct 12 minesweepers for the Indian navy at a cost of 1 billion USD. Gurgaon based Sun Group, is in discussion with Russia, to manufacture 200 Kamov Ka 226 light helicopters in Punjab.
